Rumors of a 108 degree heat index are surely enough to discourage anyone from leaving the house. Playing basketball on the hot asphalt on a hot day such as this, with the heat advisory calling for families not to leave their homes, was the day for the 1st Xtreme Basketball Xhibitions 1st Competition held July 7-8 2012 at the African American Festival. This didn’t stop the players or the fans from coming out and seeing what the “XBX” was all about.
Players mimicking birds splashing their upper bodies in ice tubs provided by Powerade and spectators had paper fans and wet towels dipped in the ice tubs, kept cool and made it through both days with no heat exhaustion cases. The XBX made a successful debut in front of thousands of spectators on the hottest day of the summer. Thanks to our players, staff, Sponsors and Partners that contributed, Powerade, Xtreme Procision, Army, and Under Armour we were able to make it a success.
So here we were on this sizzling day hidden on the backside of the festival away from all of the action, we could actually see each spectator become a fan 1 at a time as they walked up. The platform for this event was scaled to timing, space and location. It was in conjunction with the African American Festival and was new to this space. By Sunday evening, the XBX had become the main event (pre-show.)
25 of the best players in the North Atlantic Region (PG County, DC, Baltimore, Philadelphia and NY) participated in showing the onlookers what the XBX is about and making it one to remember. The battle over which city has the best ballers, bragging rights, high flying dunks, record breaking shooting streaks and the competitive natures of 25 guys in the blazing sun, stamped the credibility of the XBX that it has a space in basketball entertainment and competition!
In the end, Corey Allmond (PG “The Winner”) and Terry Hosley (Baltimore) made it to the 1-on-1 finals in which the 2 players battled hard to be ranked as the #1 1-on-1 player of this region. Corey Williams (NY) and Ameer Ali (PG) played in the 1-on-1 Main Event that simulated a heavyweight title fight fell short of this game being the Championship because of their lower point totals, but this was the best game of the evening and Corey Williams walked away with the win of this 1-on-1 barn burner. Corey Allmond (PG “Shootout Winner) and Brandon “Wings” Russell (DC Dunk Winner) battled it out in both the shooting and dunk finals. Corey won the shootout w/ an impressive display of dead eye shooting at 1 point making 17 in a row on his way to setting the record with 74 points. Brandon “Wings” Russell showed why they call him wings by winning the dunk competition showing a lot of air under his windmills and an alley oop thrown by (former And 1 player and Baltimore XBX Player) Andre “Silk” Poole from the Powerade station, that bounced once and connected with the backboard before Brandon caught it on the baseline side and threw it home. In the Finals of the 3-on-3 PG defeated Baltimore and became the 2012 XBX Competition Champs with the highest overall point’s total.
Congratulations to Corey Allmond of Prince Georges County (NBDL 2012) for getting MVP and also leading Prince Georges County's team to the top as the overall point total winners of the 1st Xtreme Basketball Xhibition (Baltimore finished in 2nd place). Corey and the Prince George County team has set the tone by posting the 1st high scores as records and stats for all XBX competitors to be ranked by in future XBX Competitions.
